What does your team do?

We are Ameliate and we’re building psychological VR apps and providing human-centred design services.

What is the idea/mission behind your team?

Our mission is to ameliorate the substantial amount of mental health problems in Finland and the EU. 1 in 6 EU citizens are suffering from mental health problems – 1 in 5 in Finland.

Tell us about your team members!

We’re a team of three. While we all take part in design and development, we also have our specialised roles. Ray Pohjanheimo from Finland is taking care of business as CEO, Zack Wilson from the US is our technical and design lead as CTO, and Michele Romani from Italy is our VR and new technology specialist as CIO.

What project are you currently working on?

Currently we’re building our CBT-VR app and improving our existing web apps (app.ameliate.com).

We’re open to taking on other projects, too, especially if they’re related to behaviour change or psychology!

Why did you decide to join Helsinki XR Center’s XR developer hub?

As a fresh, new business, it’s important to build up a network – and joining HXRC felt like the most important step to achieve it here in Finland.

When did you join the XR Hub, and how long had your team existed before joining?

We joined this spring, in 2021. Our team had been up since the end of 2020, so a couple of months before joining HXRC.

As a part of the XR Hub, how has your experience been so far?

So far so good! The most beneficial thing has been to hear about opportunities in the XR space and to learn about new developments in the field. It feels like the hub is well-connected.

Furthermore, the space is roomy, located on an inspiring campus, and being in a design and education district goes a long way in stimulating creativity. We just hope we can get back to using the space together again once the pandemic is under control.

What is the most interesting or exciting thing about extended reality?

How immersive it is! The first times we used VR headsets were breathtaking and we want to create those experiences for other people too. It’s also been exciting to research the psychological effects of XR solutions and put those into our designs.
