XR Development
Helsinki XR Center (HXRC) helps organisations design and build XR experiences that work in the real world. We take you from a first concept to a validated pilot or a production-ready product, with hands-on testing across devices in our showroom and support throughout the delivery process.
What we build
We develop XR solutions that fit your audience and context, from low-threshold mobile AR to high-immersion VR and mixed reality. Typical formats include mobile AR and location-based experiences, VR training and simulation, and cross-platform concepts that need to run on more than one device class.
What you can expect
Most engagements fall into one of three shapes:
- XR Proofs of Concept (PoCs): a fast build to validate one core idea and reduce uncertainty.
- XR Pilots: a real-context deployment to test adoption, usability, and operational fit.
- Full XR Product Development: end-to-end development to a deployment-ready build with documentation and handover.
If you are unsure which one you need, we start by scoping the goal and choosing the smallest path that still answers your key questions.
What kinds of XR do we build?
We work across the XR spectrum, selecting the right platforms and interaction models for your audience, context, and operational reality:
- Mobile AR and location-based experiences
- Spatial computing and mixed reality experiences
- VR training and simulation
- Web-based XR experiences (where a browser-first approach supports reach and low threshold)
- Cross-platform XR concepts, where the same core experience is adapted to multiple devices
Use cases by sector
These examples are starting points for what XR can do in different operating environments.
Tourism, entertainment, and the creative industries
- Guided AR tours and location-based storytelling
- Immersive visitor experiences and interactive content layers
- Accessible, multilingual experiences for diverse audiences
- Hybrid physical-digital experiences that extend onsite visits and drive repeat engagement
Cities, construction, and the built environment
- XR visualisation for stakeholder communication and approvals
- On-site AR to compare design vs reality and explain changes in place
- Mixed reality overlays for physical models, client demos, and public consultations
- Training and simulation for operational, maintenance, and site teams
Industrial operations, maintenance, and logistics
- Step-by-step guided procedures for field work and onboarding
- Safety walkthroughs and scenario-based training
- Remote support workflows (see what the technician sees)
- Visualisation of assets, equipment, and environments for faster decision-making
Marketing, media, and customer experiences
- Immersive campaigns and interactive installations
- Product storytelling, demos, and experiential marketing
- XR for events, pop-ups, showrooms, and launches
- Participatory experiences that invite audiences to interact, play, and share
How the process works
We follow a streamlined, iterative XR delivery process that starts by clarifying your goals and context, then moves through experience design, rapid prototyping, and real-world testing to ensure the solution performs well across devices and environments. The steps are summarized in the diagram below.
Testbed, devices, and facilities
Our Helsinki XR Center (HXRC) showroom can be used as a testbed during development, or as a standalone service if you want to validate an existing XR product on multiple devices.
Typical testbed activities:
- Multi-device compatibility testing
- Usability and comfort checks
- Performance and stability validation
- Accessibility and interaction evaluation
If you want to use the showroom as a testbed, see: HXRC Showroom.
Funding and engagement options
Companies typically work with us through one of these routes:
- Project-supported experimentation and advisory work, when eligibility and slots are available through initiatives such as AIStart, FAIR, or other programmes
- Co-funded RDI collaboration for larger development and evidence-building
- Commercial XR development services via Metropolia University of Applied Sciences
If you are unsure which route fits, we can guide you during the first scoping call.
