Immersive Sustainability Lab
Building Sustainable Futures through Finnish Innovation
The Immersive Sustainability Lab, a collaboration between Helsinki XR Center, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, and the Virtual World Society, is a hub for sustainable city innovation. With strong support from a network of outstanding partners and a foundation in Finnish values of equality, trust, and respect for nature, the Lab integrates emerging technologies like XR and AI to tackle global challenges in urban development.
Our mission and vision
We aim to lead global sustainability initiatives by combining technology with a human-centered approach. Our vision encompasses environmental care, social equity, cultural richness, and economic vitality, creating a comprehensive framework for sustainable urban development.
What we do
At the heart of the Lab is a multi-faceted platform that supports cities, communities, and businesses in achieving sustainability goals through innovative solutions and emerging technologies. Key activities include:
- Empowering cities: Providing tools and resources for municipalities to implement sustainable solutions.
- Supporting SMEs: Helping small and medium-sized enterprises utilize AI, XR, and other technologies to innovate and align with sustainability objectives.
- Showcasing innovation: Exhibiting Finnish expertise in immersive technologies and AI-driven solutions.
- Engaging communities: Offering inclusive and participatory learning opportunities.
- Fostering collaboration: Building international partnerships to share best practices and scale impact.
- Creating virtual and physical presence: Hosting interactive spaces for hands-on exploration while maintaining accessibility through virtual platforms like the metaverse.
Our tools and resources
The Lab combines advanced resources, including digital twins, IoT data, and urban development models, with cutting-edge tools such as 3D modeling, AI-driven simulations, and XR technologies. These enable visualization, experimentation, and implementation of impactful solutions, from urban agriculture innovations to optimizing resource use and enhancing biodiversity.
Our roadmap
The Lab’s roadmap focuses on building a strong foundation, scaling initiatives, and measuring tangible impacts. By fostering community engagement, expanding partnerships, and leveraging advanced technologies, we aim to create lasting improvements in urban sustainability.
AI Start – Tekoälyhautomo and Metropolia’s role in sustainability
The Immersive Sustainability Lab plays a critical role in the AI Start – Tekoälyhautomo Project, which supports Finnish SMEs in adopting AI and XR technologies to drive sustainable growth and digital transformation. Coordinated by Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, the project strengthens digital capabilities, fosters innovation, and promotes sustainability across the Helsinki metropolitan area.
As a key partner, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences develops virtual test platforms, offers co-development workshops, and creates the Immersive Sustainability Showroom to showcase Finnish expertise. The Lab also serves as a testbed for AI experimentation, helping SMEs leverage AI for urban planning, resource optimization, biodiversity management, and more. Through its efforts, Metropolia UAS is expanding both national and international networks, integrating technology and sustainability into global urban development efforts.
A global movement for sustainable futures
The Immersive Sustainability Lab is redefining what’s possible for sustainable urban development. By merging Finland’s core values with cutting-edge technologies and meaningful partnerships, we are paving the way for a more equitable, inclusive, and environmentally conscious future—proving that innovation and sustainability go hand in hand.
